Where did all the bad boys go?

Pete Doherty

Pete Doherty: If there is one man who can compete with the outrageous antics of Hollywood’s bad girls, it's Pete Doherty, but even he’s doing his best to kick the drugs and stay out of trouble. After five failed attempts at rehab over the past few years, Pete finally responded to treatment at a Wiltshire clinic in the summer and avoided a jail sentence after successfully passing a drugs review in October. He relapsed twice in November but remains committed to getting clean in 2008. Concerned Pete is even trying to convince Amy Winehouse to get off the drugs while her husband dries out in jail. And, according to reports, he’s in training for the London marathon!

Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom: Orlando hit the headlines in October when he was involved in a car accident with paparazzi after a rare outing to an LA nightclub. But don’t jump to conclusions – the clean-living star wasn’t drink-driving like many of his female contemporaries have done recently. And he’s not a ladies’ man either – Orlando, a practicing Buddist, fills his spare time with raising awareness of environmental issues. He is actively involved in an initiative called Global Green and has been approached by UNICEF to act as an international ambassador. An all-round good egg, if a little boring!

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake: While ex-girlfriend Britney Spears continues her very public meltdown, Justin Timberlake manages to stay scandal-free, probably because he’s so busy juggling consecutive careers as a singer, songwriter, actor, producer, fashion designer and restaurateur. Himself a child star, JT dismisses claims that ‘too much too young’ is to blame for the sorry state of stars like Britney and Lindsay, and credits his mum for raising him with a level head. Despite his fair share of celebrity girlfriends – he’s now dating Jessica Biel after four years with Cameron Diaz – there isn’t one kiss-and-tell in his background. Loosen up a little, JT!

Robbie Williams

Robbie Williams: After a successful stint in rehab in February 2007, former wild child Robbie Williams has had a scandal-free nine months, perhaps due to the calming influence of his new girlfriend, American actress Ayda Field. Robbie is busy recording a new album and is considering his career options after his EMI contract expires in 2008. A return to the Take That fold, perhaps?

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell: When Colin Farrell hit the big time in 2003, he lived up to the bad boy tag so gustily that he was dubbed Hollywood’s ‘lusty leprechaun’. And who could forget photos of the Irish actor snogging Britney Spears shortly after her break-up from Justin Timberlake? But all that changed with the birth of Farrell’s son James, who suffers from a rare form of cerebral palsy. Colin credits his young son for giving his life new direction and meaning: “I was burning the candle at both ends and the flames met in the middle. But now I have a new-found appreciation of life.” Colin, who has joint custody of James, recently took a career break to receive treatment for alcoholism and is determined to return to the top of the box office with three films due for release in 2008.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp: The person that topped the list of the best autograph signers was Johnny Depp, himself a reformed bad boy. Back in the day, Johnny seemed to be at the heart of most Hollywood scandals. As owner of The Viper Room in LA, the star was accused of letting drug dealers into his club on the night River Phoenix died of an overdose there in 1993. He was also arrested in 1994 for trashing a hotel suite and again in 1999 for fighting with paparazzi. These days, Daddy Depp lives in France with partner Vanessa Paradis and their two children, and shuns the Hollywood scene.

Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg: Mark Wahlberg is best known as the Oscar-nominated star of  The Departed, but he was charged with countless violent crimes in his teens, the most serious of which occurred in 1988 when the 16-year-old attacked two Vietnamese men in his hometown of Boston. Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder and spent time behind bars. Fast forward 10 years and the wayward youngster had cleaned himself up and hit the big time with a starring role in Boogie Nights. Now a dedicated father of two, he says he’s never tempted to return to his wild ways. “I don’t want to raise my kids in Hollywood. My professional life is going to take a backseat at some point. I want to do some great work now, some interesting movies, and then be going to school plays and soccer games far away from a camera.” Bless.

The Best Posters Of 2007

Knocked Up
#20 - Knocked Up - Seth Rogen was a revelation here. This poster plays to the new talent brilliantly, bolstering the appeal with a great strap line.

Death Proof
#19 - Death Proof - Tarantino's chase flick is loaded with the retro cool we've come to expect from QT.

The Bourne Ultimatum
#18 - The Bourne Ultimatum - Making Matt Damon look intimidating is quite a challenge. But the Bourne team pulled it off magnificently here.

Michael Clayton
#17 - Michael Clayton - A brilliant poster for legal thriller Michael Clayton. The outline of George Clooney is unmistakable even when he's out of focus.

The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
#16 - The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford - This image of Brad Pitt standing pensively in a corn field was around months before the release. The lingering presence of Casey Affleck in the background immediately captures the mood.

3:10 To Yuma
#15 - 3:10 To Yuma - A tip of the hat to the Sergio Leone era of classic westerns, this poster looks as if it belongs outside a wild west salloon.

Apocalypto
#14 - Apocalypto - Mel Gibson's Apocalypto was full of striking images. This one brilliantly sets the tone for the brutal pursuit through the Mayan jungle.

Lions For Lambs
#13 - Lions For Lambs - The film was cripplingly dull. But the people who made the poster knew where its strengths lay - the cast. Simple, effective and bolstered by another great strap line.

Rocky Balboa
#12 - Rocky Balboa - Mirroring a key moment in the first Rocky movie, this poster plays on our fond nostalgia for the Italian Stallion.

I Am Legend
#11 - I Am Legend - The film isn't with us until the new year. But this poster, boasting a magnificent post-apocalyptic cityscape, has been instrumental in generating a healthy buzz.

28 Weeks Later
#10 - 28 Week's Later - The simplicity of this one is fantastic: five words, one symbol, job done...

Hot Fuzz
#9 - Hot Fuzz - The geeky joy of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's West Country cop movie is stepped up magnificently by this poster campaign.

Smokin' Aces
#8 - Smokin' Aces - It may not have been the smartest of shootout flicks, but we loved the bullet motif on the Smokin' Aces poster.

Transformers
#7 - Transformers - Released a full 12 months prior to the film, this poster had us counting down the days to Transformers.

Waitress
#6 - Waitress - A smart and hugely underrated romantic comedy, Waitress is represented perfectly here. It just makes us want to eat pie.

Black Sheep
#5 - Black Sheep - This may just be the best tag line in the history of cinema. Okay it probably isn't actually, but we just love this one-sheet for horror comedy Black Sheep.

This Is England
#4 - This Is England - One Of The Best Films Of The Year was matched by some perfectly fitting art work. The characters and the corrugated iron capture the essence of Shane Meadows' 80s journey into the Britain of yesteryear.

Spider-Man 3
#3 - Spider-Man 3 - The result was ultimately a disappointment. But this poster campaign was simply stunning.

30 Days Of Night
#2 - 30 Days Of Night - Starring Josh Hartnett, this vampire flick needed to prove that it wasn't just another lame re-run of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This terrifying image set it apart nicely.

300
#1 - 300 - The film remained faithful to Frank Miller's stunning comic book. And so did this eye-catching poster campaign. The vertigo-inducing image captures the cartoon heroics of the Spartans brilliantly and the font, blood-spatters and all, sets it all off perfectly. A clear winner for us.

Why TV Talent Shows Are Killing Pop Music

Leona Lewis - © Rex
At the time of writing there sits - at number one in the charts and at number one in our hearts - Leona Lewis, winner of last year's X Factor and set to be a very big international star over the coming year. And while there's normally no shortage of detractors decrying those whose fleeting fame was decided by phone ballot, no one seems to mind Leona.

Despite coming from the critically frowned upon reality TV show format, people who'd cross the road to spit in Journey South's chiselled faces are wishing her well. Because, to quote the received wisdom, "she's got real talent."

Even over at the Spice Girls fan forum, they're happy to concede that she deserves to be higher in the charts than their returning heroines, again because "she's got talent." The public have decided and they have decided this is her moment.
Louis Walsh - © Doug Peters/EMPICS Entertainment/PA Photos
And it's shows like X Factor, its predecessor Pop Idol and the not-on-anymore Fame Academy that have defined this very notion of talent so that almost all music we listen to, subconsciously or not, now passes through our own internal judging panel. There's a little Louis Walsh in all of us.

This is a terrible state of affairs since it is essentially leading to the death of pop in all but name. Where once the class loner/show off/freak could take their aspirations and turn them into big shiny musical dreams, uninhibited by classical concepts of ability and therefore free to dazzle, challenge and shock.

Now, one has to perform Olympian feats of vocal prowess, all the while being followed by cameras to capture your mad granny's every shriek of gum-bearing delight as you graduate to the next stage of the competition (thanks to the previous contestant being outed as a violent 47-year-old drug mule).

And the result has been, for the most part, a bland, homogenised product with a heartlessly short shelf life (where art Danny from Hear'say now?)

And while exception-that-proves-the-rule, Girls Aloud, are left to carry the flickering torch for what we remember as pop, the rest of the music industry, in reaction to the transparency of the reality TV process, delivers us a host of uninspired, identikit, but most definitely 'real' groups, playing in what's become paradoxically known as the 'indie' style, elevated to a status above and beyond anything their dismal output deserves, merely for what they represent.
Simon Cowell - © Doug Peters/EMPICS Entertainment/PA Photos
The concept of 'alternative' music is literally back with a vengeance. And the ugly carnage of the war is Fearne Cotton waxing lyrical on Radio One over 'new music' because, to her, a crappy band from MySpace is worth a million Michelle McManuses (that is unless she's presenting the ITV2 coverage, of course).

Add to that the unstoppable proliferation of singer songwriters following in the drippy footsteps of James Blunt and Katie Melua who, when compared to Ray Quinn (and his junior swing) take on Dylanesque like importance in a musical world perceived, wrongly, by the general public to be dominated by talent show wannabes, manipulated by a sneering, comedy trouser-wearing svengali.

And the mentors themselves aren't immune to the whiff of authenticity. Remember Sharon Osbourne fawning over the raw rock power of Tabby? Or that buffoon Peter Brame, flidding about the Fame Academy stage like Thom Yorke trying to scratch an unreachable itch? Vocal coach Carrie Grant could barely contain her joy at his bringing such tangible credibility to their television programme.

These people will soil every musical concept you hold dear. It can only be a matter of time before an X Factor boy band performs an a cappella reading of 'Up The Bracket' and an entire generation of indie kids commit hara-kiri in despair.

But even to the purest of musical souls, these shows are addictive. Perhaps we only tune in to howl with derision at the self-deluded, semi-autistic, tone-deaf auditionees. Maybe we only watch for the dry-as-dust Cowell put-downs and find ourselves inadvertently hooked by the soap opera of it all.
John Lennon - © JOHN LINDSAY/AP/PA Photos
But for whatever reason, the longer these shows go on, the longer and more irreversible the cultural harm. Unless you're a Westlife-buying idiot, none of your favourite singers, past or present, would have made it through to boot camp under the guidelines of these shows.

Could John Lennon sing? He mostly shouted. Could Johnny Rotten sing? More a sneer set to music. Bob Dylan – blow your nose. Janis Joplin – clear your throat. And while we're at it, you ever heard Madonna sustain a note, or Kylie for that matter?

And we all 'know' the Spice Girls can't sing because the tabloids remind us on a daily basis. But they're looking at a world tour and 17 sold out shows at the O2 Arena. Not bad for talentless.

Because all of these people are great rock and pop stars precisely because they didn't sound or behave like anyone else; precisely because they used the perceived flaws in their voice to create unique and hugely successful records.
Sharon Osbourne and Dannii Minogue - © Doug Peters/EMPICS Entertainment/PA Photos
Everyone capable of passing breath through their vocal folds (they're not chords – look at a picture) can sing. Whether anyone likes the resulting sound is purely subjective judgement and one we shouldn't allow to be influenced by the man who once announced that Girl Thing (remember them?) would be bigger than the Spice Girls, the man who brought you Boyzone (they're back), a woman who admits to sending her and her children's poo to people in envelopes, and the lovely Dannii Minogue who we'll leave out of this on account of being lovely.

Because singing isn't about purity of tone. It isn't about melisma (the singing of several notes on one syllable that Leona, Mariah and Whitney do so revoltingly). It isn't about that breathy 'sincere' sound that Shayne Ward does so smugly.

It's about the individual sound a person makes which stamps their identity on a song and has, since it began, made pop the thrilling, divisive, unpredictable, controversial, ecumenical entity that, at some point in our childhood, changed our lives.

Musical reality TV shows attempt to deny all those variables and define pop by their own clueless, tasteless parameters and by doing so risk killing pop music forever and inadvertently creating all manner of ugly, reactive beasts, in the process.

That's not to say that manufactured boy bands can't be fantastic or that girl groups can't be a political force. A great artist doesn't even have to write their own songs to be great. But a panel of old millionaires should not get to decide what's good and what's bad. Because there are no rules in music, except your own.

Historical sights in UK------London Tower Bridge伦敦塔桥

London Bridge is falling, falling down. I bet everyone knows this song well. London Bridge is known as the symbol of London and also is one of the famous attrctions in UK.
Standing on the high level walkways of Tower Bridge, you  can see St. Paul's Cathedral ,the London Eye and lots of very famous sights of London, so the view from up  is absolutely fantastic.
It has two Gothic towers, and the walkways span between the two towers. They were actually built to fit in with the Tower of London nearby, so that's why they're Gothic and looks a lot older. It's actually a Victorian structure and it was finished in 1894 .so it's actually a lot younger than people think it is.
In old days London's River Thames had a lot of river traffic. So
river traffic has priority over road traffic. That's people have to wait when a boat is passing under the bridge,no matter how important the person inside the car..
Bill Clinton was actually stuck during a bridge lift, he couldn't get across and he was in the first car waiting for the bridge to lift. That was a few years ago now. So regardless of who is waiting it's always the boats that get through first.
He made it across safely in the end. But one year a London bus had a very frightening experience when it was crossing the bridge. The bridge started to rise with the bus going halfway up it. The driver had to make a split-second decision (一瞬之间作出决定)and decided to go for the jump, and bounced across to the other side. There were 16 passengers on the bus at the time who got bounced about, but there were no serious injuries. It can't happen today because it has  got steel gates that close before the bridge can lift.

Historical sights in UK---Madame Tussauds 杜莎夫人蜡像馆

Now in lots of big cities there is a place where you can meet lots of famous people and  have your picture taken with them ,Brad Pitt,Beyonce, David Beckham, Johnny Depp.Well there's just one thing though you need to know…the famous people are made from wax.
Yeah, you got it.That's Madame Tussauds – an attraction where you can see wax figures ---likenesses of famous people, particular to the UK market but also internationally well-known like Hollywood celebrities, of lots of famous celebrities.
This is a popular tourist attraction in London. Why is it so popular?
I think there's always been traditionally a frisson when people get near to a famous person they normally wouldn't be able to and I think  Madame Tussauds aims to tap into that.
Maybe you are wondering which celebrity is causing the most excitement at Madame Tussauds at the moment? It's Johnny Depp.
Johnny Depp's figure is absolutely spot on and this one just raises the bar in terms of likeness – and I think the whole experience around in the room – it's like a creaking pirate ship, the sights, the smells of a pirate ship. That's definitely the most popular from guest feedback as well.

Key words:

10 Things Gangster Movies Have Taught Us…

The Godfather (Image © Rex Features)

1. Don’t betray the mob - If you want to mix with wise guys, the first law that needs to be recognised is the rule of silence (Omerta). This means that if you talk to the wrong people, you’re going to get whacked. For a particularly nasty example of what can happen, see the fate of Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather Part 1. Having married The Don’s daughter Connie, Carlo is in the family. But he gets on the wrong side of Sonny Corleone and takes a beating. Rather than dealing with it, Carlo goes to the rival Barzini family and gets Sonny killed. When Michael takes over the family, Carlo finds himself on the wrong end of a nasty garrotting incident.

Casino (Image © Rex Features)

2. Gangsters like swearing - There’s a scene in Casino where Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci meet up in the desert outside Vegas for an argument. In two minutes (we’ve timed it), the word ‘f*ck’ is said an extraordinary 21 times. Casino’s total usage of the f word tallies to an extraordinary 398. Goodfellas isn’t far behind on 300. If you want to get in with the mob, get with the foul language.

Casino (Image © Rex Features)

3. Don’t think too much of yourself - There are plentiful examples of wannabe gangsters thinking they’re all that and getting offed as a result. Genre new-guy American Gangster involves one such wannabe who thinks he’s big enough to rub Denzel Washington up the wrong way. Result: a bullet to the face. Joe Pesci made the same mistake in Casino, thinking he owned the whole of Vegas. He ended up being beaten to death in that notorious corn field scene.

Scarface (Image © Rex Features)

4. Stay off the drugs - An excessive drug-fuelled lifestyle may seem like the ideal reward for a successful mobster. But the white powder will ultimately be your downfall. Exhibit A is, of course, Al Pacino as drug-lord Tony Montana in Scarface (1983). Blow (2001) sees Johnny Depp give us another great example of how bad things can turn when the drug party is over.

Reservoir Dogs (Image © Rex Features)

5. Try not to get shot in the stomach - As Mr Orange (Tim Roth) teaches us in Reservoir dogs, it’s really painful.

Goodfellas (Image © Rex Features)

6. Don’t screw with Joe Pesci - Standing an entire five feet and four inches tall, Joe is probably the most vicious mobster that ever lived. Just look what happened to the guy who got killed with the pen in Casino, or the guy who mocks him in Goodfellas. They both regretted messing with Joe. Be warned!

The Departed (Image © Rex Features)

7. If you’re a cop and you’re coming up to retirement. Watch out! - If you’re thinking of coming back for one last job before retiring, we seriously suggest you reconsider. Martin Scorsese gave us an archetypal example of this trend in The Departed (2006) when poor old Martin Sheen got chucked off a roof.

Mean Streets (Image © Rex Features)

8. Don’t sit in the front seat of the car - Here’s a fact: the interior of a car is the most common setting for a murder scenes in the movies. For gangster flicks in particular, this is prime killing ground. It was treacherous bodyguard Paulie Gatto’s mistake in The Godfather. He should have known something was up when he saw Rocco Lampone sat in the seat behind him. Of course, you might also have a nasty crash like in Mean Streets (above).

Carlito's Way (Image © Rex Features)

9. If you’re gonna kill someone, kill them! - Revenge is a classic theme across the gangster genre. Wise guys are not the types to drop a vendetta so, if you’re going to go for someone, make sure the guy is good and dead. This is the undoing of Al Pacino’s character in Carlito’s Way when he fails to finish off Benny Blanco (John Leguizamo). It also pops up in The Godfather Part II when a younger Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) executes a long-term vendetta against Don Ciccio (Giuseppe Sillato).

(Image © Rex Features)

10. Don’t start your car in a quiet car park at night - There’s probably a bomb in it.

Historical Sights in UK---Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus which is a traffic junction in the middle of London is surrounded by huge grand Victorian buildings. On some of the buildings there're huge neon signs advertising everything from tapes to electrical equipment to beer.
Piccadilly Circus was built in 1819 when the architect John Nash designed Regent Street and it was originally a roundabout joining the roads with a fountain in the middle – it’s not a roundabout anymore – it’s still a very big junction.
Why is it such a famous place in London? It’s right in the middle of the West End ,there's great shops and everything near here – and the famous statue of the angel Eros on the fountain in the middle is what most people come to see. It’s amemorial to Lord Shaftesbury who in the 19th century helped abolish child labour in London and it’s actually of Anteros who is the Greek god of brotherly love but people in London have actually shortened it to Eros which is in fact the Greek God of sexual love.

International Communication Department

International Communication Department was founded with the support of the International Communication College of CUC for the purpose of fostering the qualified compound talents of international communication who not only have a good command of language, but also have a great knowledge of mass media and some other domestic and international background information. Two special fields are included in the department, namely the art of broadcasting and hosting. The department has run undergraduate programs in 14 language programs including English, Japanese, Germany, French, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, Vietnamese, etc. To meet the demand of society for professionals with special skill, some basic courses of journalism and language skills learning are offered in the department for the purpose of cultivating students into professionals with comprehensive knowledge of both journalism and language skill. We have been holding activities like speech contest, the film-dubbing contest, English short play contest, and debate etc. every year. Those activities provide a stage for students to display their professional skill and versatile abilities. In order to send the excellent students to study abroad, we will find every chance to run education jointly with famous foreign colleges and universities and enhance the exchange and cooperation with them. There is still a long way to go in the new century, and we’ll seize every opportunity to make progress and work hard to establish a modernized and international department at high level.
